TUESDAY 12 JULY 10.30am – 4.00pm
Iain Grant: The day will be suitable for beginners and those with more experience, and will look at the versatility of soft pastels and pastel pencils, and some of the techniques possible. I’d like you to bring along a subject which inspires you, it may be a landscape, seascape, floral subject or still life. I’ll also have some reference material from around the garden and beyond.
Pastels are particularly good for atmospheric skies and landscapes but we can try anything. My plan is for a fairly short introduction / refresher about the medium, a quick demonstration, then you’ll do a 30 minute (yes 30 minute) painting (out in the garden if we can) to give you a chance to try different materials / techniques and see how fast pastels can be. Later on you’ll get a chance to work on a more finished picture of your choosing, with me around to answer questions and interfere. Numbers will be limited to 10 participants so there should be plenty of time for me to spend a while with each of you.
I will have some spare pastels and pencils and a variety of surfaces suitable for pastel. We may use some wet techniques, so if you want to bring a couple of medium to larger brushes (not your best) and some watercolour, gouache, or even acrylic as well as any pastels you may have, that would be good. Enthusiasm and a sense of humour also welcomed.
Pastels are pretty mucky at times so old clothes and finger wipes are essential
Tea/coffee is included and served at mid morning and mid afternoon breaks.
Tearoom facilities are available for lunch or bring a picnic to enjoy in the grounds.
