TUESDAY 4 MAY 10.30am – 4.00pm
Richard Mabey: The day will include instruction, practice and encouragement for anyone looking to gain more confidence and skill with the basics of watercolour painting. Improvers, lapsed and beginners are all welcomed. You will be able to paint along, as I demonstrate, following my painting process step by step and producing completed loose and lively watercolours to take home.
For practical purposes the day will be spent working in the Primrose room. This is a pleasant room in which to paint and has a lovely garden aspect. Individual guidance and encouragement will be offered throughout the day.
The painting process will include focus on shapes, tonal value sketches and colour schemes/harmony. At the pen and wash class you will be shown how to draw and sketch with pen and ink and how to combine this with painting a watercolour wash. We will focus on simplification of composition so that drawing will not have to be complicated or time consuming.
Please bring whatever equipment you are familiar with, including 2B pencil, colours, preferably in tubes, brushes and paper. A white plastic palette with small areas to squeeze out tube colours together with some good size mixing wells is essential. Brush Sizes 3 (Rigger or Medium Sword Liner) and 8 and 16 (round) are recommended. For the line and wash class bring some waterproof ink and a steel nib pen or Pilot drawing pen size 0.2 or 0.5 (Pilot DR, Edding, Profipen or similar). Watercolour paper or pads of 140lb/300gsm will be most practical as it is heavy/thick enough not to require stretching. A rough or Not surface paper is preferable. Water jars, blocks and boards to support pad or paper will be provided.
These are Artist quality watercolours (in tubes) that I use and would recommend if you can afford them: Light Red, Raw Sienna, Winsor Yellow, Winsor Red, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Blue (Red Shade), Brown Madder. Student quality colours, in tubes, will also be fine if you have them. The course will begin at 10.30 am in the Primrose room.
Tea/coffee is included and served at mid morning and mid afternoon breaks.
Tearoom facilities are available for lunch or bring a picnic to enjoy in the grounds.
