On the morning of Tuesday 23 April, HRH The Countess of Wessex visited The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum to officially open the new 2-acre Jubilee Arboretum. In brilliant sunshine The Countess was welcomed to the Garden by Acting Chairman of the Fortescue GardenTrust, David Incoll, and Head Gardener, Nick Haworth. Following a tour of the garden, she unveiled a plaque at the entrance to the Arboretum.
A posy of flowers gathered from the garden was presented to Her Royal Highness by 11-year old Madeline Hewes, one of a group of local schoolchildren from St. Andrew’s CE Primary School at Buckland Monachorum. Following the extended cold winter, the spring garden was at its glorious best, and added to the pleasure of all visitors and supporters attending this special occasion.

The diversity of The Garden House took me by surprise

As a visitor from The Netherlands and being a keen plantsman and devoted gardener, the diversity of The Garden House took me by surprise. This including grounds, sphere, design and planting scheme. And best of all, I got the feeling, true or not, I can achieve such an exquisite garden myself. Many other grand gardens are of great beauty but tend to have a bit of detachment which is entirely absent at The Garden House. Very inspiring!!!

Nick Haworth took over the reins as Head Gardener at the beginning of the year, and is eagerly looking forward to the open season. Having gained over 25 years’ gardening experience, Nick says, “The Garden House has always inspired me with its fantastic plant collection, creative hard landscaping and naturalistic planting style. I am still getting to know the garden and wish to discover what it is that our visitors take from it. I will then continue developing the garden in the spirit of experimentation and, above all, enjoy what this unique place has to offer as one of the most stimulating gardens I know.” (See the Events Calendar for ‘Meet the Head Gardener’ opportunities).
