Employers of 'On-call' fire-fighters recognised

The Garden House in Dartmoor has been presented with a certificate by Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service to recognise their support of an ‘on-call’ member of staff.

Simon Carey, the Fire Station Manager presented the certificate to Donna Wadham, General Manager for The Garden House, who manages the property on behalf of The Fortescue Garden Trust.

The certificate recognises the support provided by The Garden House in releasing staff to undertake on-call firefighting duties. David Milburn, has been the garden foreman for 31 years and has been an on call fireman for all of that time, based at Yelverton Fire Station.

Known as ‘one of the finest gardens in England’, The Garden House is located on the fringes of Dartmoor and employs a team of 40 staff and volunteers, who look after its 10 acres of exceptional gardens, shop and cafe.

“We are delighted to receive this certificate on behalf of The Garden House team,” said Donna Wadham. “David is a crucial member of the gardening team here, but we have been able to demonstrate that it is also possible to enable him to also serve the wider community, by supporting his firefighting work. We hope this acts as an inspiration to other employers considering supporting other on-call firefighters.”

Simon Carey said: “This certificate was presented as a thanks and appreciation to The Garden House for releasing David to undertake on call firefighting duties - but also to thank David for everything he has done over the last 31 years. We hope others will follow this example and join our on-call firefighting team.”

The programme is designed to highlight the importance of supporting on call firefighters in the local community and to attract more on-call firefighters. Anyone interested in becoming an on-call firefighter should follow this link.

The Garden House is open this winter every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11am-3pm, offering roast lunches and homemade cakes, a unique selection of Christmas gifts and offers a chance to explore the beauty of the gardens in winter.
